About Compulsive Gambling
Compulsive gambling, or gambling addiction is a disorder which basically affects mental health in the first place.
Just as drinking excessively makes someone want to drink more and more to achieve the same effect, so does gambling make someone raise their bets and just keep gambling because they believe they will ultimately win.
There is no problem when someone gambles for fun and entertainment. The problem comes when people start gambling in a compulsive manner, not being able to stop and doing just about anything to get their money and raise the bets. Continuously chasing bets is one of the first signs of gambling addiction. When you feel all that matters is one more bet, and another oneā¦then you should seek professional help. Do not let gambling addiction ruin your life and your dreams. It is much better to try and overcome addiction in its incipient phase, then much later when things are already very complicated.
Main symptoms of gambling addiction include the following:
- Taking bigger and bigger gambling risks almost every day - Viewing gambling as a main aim in life - Thinking about gambling obsessively - Not learning from mistakes- i.e. you have already lost plenty of money with one type of gambling, yet you continue to raise the bets even more - Viewing gambling as the best means to ease every day problems at home, at the workplace, etc. - Being less and less preoccupied by work and family and focusing your attention on gambling.
- Borrowing money that you cannot return in order to gamble. Repeatedly doing this is an even stronger sign that you might struggle with gambling addiction. - Have tried to stop gambling but you are not able to. This is the point when you should think about getting professional help such as gambling addiction treatment
